Highlighting Liberty Precision’s Advanced Swiss Machining Services

Few services come close to the speed, consistency, and quality of our Swiss machining services. Derived from a method dating back to the nineteenth century in the production of Swiss watches, this approach has evolved into one of the most advanced and efficient machining processes available today.

Liberty Precision’s investment in Swiss machines dates back to the business's formation in 2020, and it has been a cornerstone of our precision CNC machining services ever since. As an AS9100D-certified machine shop, we’ve prioritized the ability to manufacture complex components with ultra-tight tolerances and intricate features. Today, we continue to invest in cutting-edge technology and training, positioning ourselves as a forward-thinking Wisconsin aerospace machine shop known for delivering exceptional results.

Features of Swiss Machining Services at Liberty Precision

Swiss machining offers significant benefits that make it an essential process for the industries we support, including aerospace manufacturing. Here’s what sets Swiss machining apart from other precision CNC machining services:

Single-Operation Production

One of the primary advantages of Swiss machining is the ability to run parts complete in a single operation, minimizing the need for secondary processes. By simplifying production, our precision machine shop delivers the following:

  • Faster lead times

  • Reduced opportunities for errors

  • Exceptional accuracy and consistency

  • Minimal scrap

For instance, many of our Tsugami Swiss machines are equipped with B-axis programmable tooling, allowing our team to produce highly complex components that would otherwise require multiple operations—all in a single setup.

Top-Tier Precision and Complexity

Our Swiss machining services excel at producing components with incredibly tight tolerances and intricate features. A prime example of this is the oscillating cutting technology used in some of our Tsugami machines. This late-breaking technology breaks up chips along predetermined oscillation paths, reducing chip wrap and improving part quality. This is critical for achieving the precision required in aerospace machining services and other sectors that demand exacting standards.

Meeting Industry Demands

Industries such as aerospace, defense, and medical rely on our Swiss machining capabilities to produce parts that demand absolute precision. For instance, we recently produced an extremely complex gun part (as featured on Midwest Gun Works) that demonstrates the advanced functionality of our machines.

Our team completed this component in a single operation on our Tsugami SS207-5AX from a 20-millimeter round bar, a significant reduction from its previous four to five operations from its previous supplier. According to Tsugami and our CAM vendor, this piece was the most complex they’ve ever seen made with their machine and software.

Our Swiss machining capabilities have also opened doors to valuable partnerships. At a trade show we attended years ago in Pasadena, CA, a handful of engineers from a major space manufacturer approached us. They had been struggling to find Swiss machining capabilities on the West Coast, where demand far exceeded local capacity. Given our location and strong Swiss machining expertise, we were able to step in and deliver the solutions they needed. This relationship has since flourished, and we still work closely with this company to deliver precision and quality.

Investments in Equipment and Training

Our reputation as a top precision machine shop stems from our equipment and the highly skilled people operating it. Liberty Precision exclusively uses Swiss machines from Tsugami, one of the world’s leading equipment manufacturers. With 15 Tsugami Swiss machines on our shop floor, we’ve intentionally built redundancy and flexibility into our operations. This means we can strategically match the right part to the right machine, optimizing efficiency and quality. Our machines can handle bar diameters ranging from 12 to 38 millimeters, enabling us to produce a wide range of components for diverse applications.

However, technology alone isn’t enough to deliver superior CNC machining services. Liberty Precision invests heavily in training and skill development to ensure our team remains at the forefront of machining advancements. Whether through ToolingU courses, partnerships with Milwaukee Area Technical College, or direct training from Tsugami, we ensure our workforce stays sharp, knowledgeable, and prepared to handle the most challenging complex machining projects.
